Argalā: Locking in Results in Astrology
The concept of certain houses, or areas of life, being ‘locked in’ (argalā) is quite simple, but can often confuse students of astrology when taking it from many different perspectives, from different house positions.
Looking from a particular house, argalā shows what is being given to that house, or area of life, or if there is something blocking the objectives.
While you could take any house to see what is being given to that particular house, it’s easiest to start with your rising sign.
The 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 11th houses from your rising sign all give to you, as this is what the rising sign represents. The 12th, 10th, 9th, 6th and 3rd block these indications.
The 2nd house shows the food, wealth and resources you have, the 4th house, the home comforts and sense of happiness, the 5th, future speculations, including children and creative projects, the 8th, longevity and the 11th house, gains and earnings.
The 2nd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 11th are blocked by the activities of the 12th, 10th, 9th, 6th and 3rd.
The most obvious example is when you spend more (12th house) than you save (2nd house).
The 10th house of career blocks the home, as it is all about having to go out to work, taking you away from the comforts of your home environment.
The 9th house blocks the 5th house, as the 9th house is the past and the 5th is the future. What we experience in the past has an impact on what we think we can experience in the future. More specifically, the 9th house represents our beliefs, which have a direct impact on what we think is possible in the future.
The things you do, or don’t do which you probably should, (6th house) block longevity (8th house). The bad habits (6th house) we cannot overcome decrease longevity (8th house).
The 3rd house of selfish pleasures blocks your ability to make money, as gains are more easily obtained when you are more giving, as well as earning money instead of enjoying yourself!
*An exception is seen in the 3rd, whenever there is a ‘malefic’ planet placed within, showing someone’s ability to get what they want, regardless.
The 7th house can either give or block, depending on the signs and planets involved. The 1st house can actually block the 7th, in turn, if there are more planets in the 1st, for example, thus blocking relationships, as there is more focus on the self (1st) then on partners (7th).
While any of these indications may show the focus, based on strengths of each, the results can be either good or bad based on the whole chart and what the focus is. For example, you may have more planets in the 12th house of spending than the 2nd house of savings, but you can either be a spendthrift who laments not ever having enough or someone who is very giving and lives a life of servitude. Both are possible, I guess.
The Past Influences the Future
While this is not a popular concept in the New Age, the past is seen to have a direct impact on the future based on the houses of astrology.
Looking at it from the perspective of the rising sign, the 12th, 9th, 6th and 3rd houses have a direct impact on the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th houses.
While this can only be seen from the rising sign, the concept of argalā can be applied to any house, showing how each area of life is either experiencing the results of that house or if the objectives are blocked.
The 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses represents the present. The 10th house of career has a direct impact on the 4th, blocking its indications, but the 7th house of relationships can either ‘lock in’ or block the 1st house, depending on the signs and planets involved.
Every house impacts every other, to some degree. In other words, every area of our life has an impact on every other.
Our health, home, relationships and career, the 1st, 4th, 7th and 10th houses, have a huge impact on each other, of course, while the past continues to impact what is possible in the future, i.e. the 12th, 9th, 6th and 3rd have a direct impact on the 2nd, 5th, 8th and 11th.
